Dream of Venus
Venus was born of the sea, rising from its foam fully formed and carried ashore on a shell. This series is a reverie on that moment: the ocean, the goddess, and the amorphous seascape of dreams.
The name is borrowed from Salvador Dalí, whose Dream of Venus pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair was a surrealist grotto where the goddess lay sleeping while sirens swam through the water around her.
Sarah's sculptures render metal into forms that move like water or silk. Girandoles unravel into ribbons, petals wilt, waves curl and break, and aquamarine and pearl catch the light like sea spray. Beauty here is never quite still, and never quite permanent.
This Spring we invited Vancouver photographer Jin Zhang to take a series of portraits of the talented Lacri Galagan, a classically trained pianist from Romania. She brought the collection to life through her lyrical and expressive presence.
